The latest from the BUAV's Chief Executive...

Great news for stray cats and dogs!

I was delighted with the news that the UK Government has announced it will introduce a legislative ban on the use of stray domestic animals, such as cats and dogs, in experiments. The Government had planned to remove the current protection granted to stray animals which spared them from ending up being used in experiments.

Our opposition to this proposed change received great support from both the public and politicians. Thank you to everyone who responded to our urgent appeal and to those who contacted their MPs directly to alert them to this issue.

In other news, the BUAV has alerted people across the UK and overseas to  controversial publicly funded kitten experiments which took place at Cardiff University. In these disturbing experiments, litters of new-born kittens were raised in total darkness for 12 weeks, whilst others were deprived of sight in one eye by having their eyelids sewn shut.

Our exposé made headline news and received national media coverage including on BBC Breakfast, Daily Mirror, The Daily Mail and Wales on Sunday. We also received backing from international comedian Ricky Gervais, who told the BUAV “I am appalled that kittens are being deprived of sight in one eye by having their eyelids sewn shut. I thought sickening experiments like these were a thing of the past. I support the BUAV in calling for this research to be stopped.” Such high profile coverage enables us to be the voice for the millions of animals suffering in UK laboratories.

Our petition has also received widespread support. Thank you to everyone who has joined us in speaking out against  these cruel experiments. If you haven't already done so, please sign our petition and share with your family and friends.

Without your support we could not continue to expose cruel experiments like these.

Until next time…
