I am shocked by the findings of the recent investigation by the BUAV into the trade in primates for research in Mauritius and the fact that up to 10,000 monkeys are exported to laboratories every year from the island.

 

Please consider the impact that this cruel trade has upon Mauritius's international reputation, particularly amongst tourists. Mauritius is a top holiday destination, yet many people are unaware of the suffering inflicted on the island's monkey population. I fully support the BUAV's efforts to raise awareness amongst tourists about this appalling trade.

 

The trapping of wild monkeys causes great suffering. The conditions in which they are kept fail to meet the many complex behavioural and psychological needs of these highly intelligent and social animals.

 

I appeal to you to end this cruelty now. Please ban the capture, breeding and export of primates from Mauritius.
