BUAV delivers letter to Home Office calling for independent inquiry at Imperial College London

18/04/2013

Jim Dowd MP accompanied the BUAV today to hand in a letter to Home Office Minister Lord Taylor of Holbeach in light of the failings uncovered by our undercover investigation at Imperial College London

The letter which has been signed by MPs from all political parties calls on the Government to set up a full independent inquiry into the concerns raised by the BUAV following our investigation at Imperial College London.

Jim Dowd MP said:I am shocked by the findings of the BUAV investigation into animal research at Imperial College London.  I urge the Government to launch a full independent inquiry"

The investigation carried out by the BUAV, which was reported in the Sunday Times at the weekend, found breaches of Home Office project licences, neglect and incompetence from researchers and members of staff. Imperial College announced that it has set up an investigation to be carried out by a prominent animal researcher from the Medical Research Council (MRC) which also funds animal research at the Imperial College.

However, the MPs have joined the BUAV in calling for an inquiry to be completely independent of both the Home Office (that regulate animal experiments) and Imperial College, as well as any institution funding or supporting research there.

Adrian Sanders MP said:I was most concerned to learn of the shocking animal suffering uncovered by the BUAV at Imperial College London. I urge the Home Office to act upon the BUAV’s allegations and launch a full and independent inquiry.
