The BUAV team is today at the Liberal Democrat conference in Glasgow and Dr Nick Palmer, the BUAV’s Director of Policy will be presenting at a fringe event tomorrow.

Dr Palmer will be speaking alongside Robin McGhee from the Young Liberals with a presentation entitled “More and more animal experiments – should Liberal Democrats promise a change?” Dr Palmer will talk about the Coalition Agreement which contained two pledges about animal experiments, neither of which have been fulfilled. He will ask Liberal Democrat members to think about this issue as they embark on their preparations for the 2015 General Election.

This event is a great opportunity to showcase the work of the BUAV and promote some of our key current campaigns such as Broken Promises, Our Best Friends and Licensed to Kill.

We are asking MPs from all parties to sign EDM 442 which calls on the Government to uphold its pledge to reduce animal experiments, and also EDM 514 which calls for an end to the use of cats and dogs in research. In addition, we will ask parliamentary candidates to show their support for animals in laboratories by signing up to the BUAV’s six steps to begin the work of ending animal experiments.

The Liberal Democrat conference is the second political party conference that the BUAV has attended this season. BUAV’s CEO Michelle Thew received strong support on Saturday when she spoke at a fringe event of the Green Party conference.
