URGENT ACTION ALERT! The BUAV has received information of a key meeting due to be held at China Southern Airlines head office in the next few days to discuss whether the airline will restart transporting shipments of primates from China to the USA. If it decides to do so, the first shipment could arrive in the USA as early next week.
The USA remains the world’s largest importer of monkeys for research. However in the past few months, several key international carriers, such as China Eastern Airlines, have stopped the transport of primates for this purpose. This is having a major impact on the US primate research industry in securing regular supplies of monkeys from China, a major supplier to the USA and the world's largest exporter of primate for research purpose. Transporting primates in the cargo hold on passenger airlines is the cheaper option for laboratories. Commissioning cargo carriers costs thousands of dollars more, thereby increasing the price of each individual monkey. To keep costs down, primate suppliers and laboratories in the USA are, therefore, trying hard to secure new passenger airlines willing to become involved in this cruel business or persuade others to lift their embargoes.
Last year, China Southern Airlines suspended the transportation of monkeys to the USA for research. It is now reconsidering its position. It is crucial that China Southern is made aware of the strength of public feeling on this issue. Please take action today!
Contact China Southern Airlines and politely request that the airline does not start transporting primates again:
